What Employers Can Do

Workplaces Leading the Way in Sustainable Travel

Commuting to and from work makes up a major share of daily travel in Whitehorse—so workplaces play a key role in shaping how our community moves.

About 55% of Whitehorse’s total population are commuters, meaning most daily trips are work-related. That gives employers a unique opportunity to influence how people travel and support a shift toward more sustainable options.

By encouraging walking, biking, taking transit, and carpooling, employers can reduce traffic, improve air quality, and support a healthier, more connected, and climate-friendly Whitehorse. Together, workplaces and employees can help the City reach its goal of 40% sustainable commute trips by 2040—one trip at a time.

Get started or keep your momentum going by exploring the resources and ideas below to make sustainable commuting easier at your workplace—and join the fun during Active Commute Month each May to celebrate your team’s success and inspire others to do the same.

Encourage Sustainable Ways to Get to Work

Help employees choose sustainable ways to get to work:

  • Share safe walking and biking routes to your workplace
  • Show where to find secure bike parking
  • Post bus routes and schedules, and promote transit pass discounts
  • Encourage carpooling or ride-sharing through a workplace app or message board
  • Offer small rewards for people who use active or shared travel options

Make Sustainable Travel Part of Your Workplace Culture

Keep your team motivated and proud of their sustainable travel choices:

  • Share success stories and tips in newsletters, emails, or staff chats
  • Create friendly challenges like “Most Sustainable Commuter of the Month”
  • Celebrate year-round efforts by joining the citywide Active Commute Month challenge each May
  • Connect commuting options to wellness programs or team-building events
  • Ask for feedback on what’s working and what could improve
  • Celebrate milestones and share progress with your team to keep the momentum going.

Workplace Travel Guide Framework

The City of Whitehorse is developing a Workplace Travel Guide Framework to encourage sustainable commuting for both employers and employees.

You can help by completing a short survey about what helps or hinders sustainable travel at your workplace:

  • Take the survey here (closes November 10)
  • Focus group workshop: November 25

The final guide will include practical tools and a network of resources for promoting active and shared commuting that is suited to Whitehorse conditions. Stay tuned!
